We would also be looking to input your targeted “main keyword” that would make up around 1% of the content. Once established, this would rise to around 2% for the same size article. The article will also have many variations of your main keyword and related keywords. This is a very important format when we look at SEO and content, and how they are used in conjunction with each other, as it’s easy to create content that has no SEO usability, which won’t rank at all. Whereas if you try and integrate SEO into content when it’s being created, the finished content is going to have much more chance of being ranked and favoured by Google for many variations of your keyword.

We have to remember (still using Google as an example) that there aren’t any humans on a day-to-day basis looking for good sites to rank. What’s in place of an actual person are algorithms based on a rough idea on what good content should contain. It is therefore possible to achieve a certain formula to replicate these results that will comply with Google’s “good content” criteria. This is why we find it very important to stick to the SEO content format when we look at articles in particular, as this is the most effective format we have found that works well. Being able to use analytics to compare previous trends also helps, as we are able to see which new SEO techniques are most effective, as it’s clear if there is a breakaway trend that really takes off that we can adapt and develop these techniques for customer’s websites.

Once the content is published “offsite SEO”, activities that promote the content across the internet, are used to increase the popularity of the content. The more “popular” the content is seen by Google, the more likely it is the article or web page will rank well.

When we consider this aspect, it denotes a rough idea on what your content has to contain in order for it to rank and deemed effective in regards to SEO. When we look at what content brings to the picture, we need to look at the amount of promotion you are creating for the article, and an effective call to action, all whilst keeping in the constraints of 800-1000 words. We have concluded that content on a website will not be found in search engines without SEO techniques being applied. However, a website will not be found in search engines unless it has great content.

Great content has three functions. Firstly, good content that addresses a problem for a potential customer and provides a solution, is likely to engage the website visitor and encourage them to continue reading. Secondly, once you have captured the attention of the reader you can provide a solution to their problem and start to convert then to a paying customer. Lastly, great content gives Google multiple opportunities to understand the message your website, or webpage, or blog post is trying to convey. Once Google understands the message, and if it deems it quality information, it will rank the content for searches based on the message.

The format of your content should be:

  1. Introduction to the issue / problem.
  2. Why this is usually an issue and the effects this issue can have for the reader.
  3. Name and explain a number of solutions for the customer and how they will resolve the issue.
  4. Why you are the company to provide these solutions.
  5. A call to action.

This can be as simple or as complicated as the subject matter allows. An example for a “leaking tap” could be:

  1. Leaking taps are an annoyance and yet easy to fix.
  2. A leaking tap can keep you awake at night with it’s continual dripping and, if you are on a water meter, cost you money.
  3. You could fix it yourself, by changing the washer (a brief explanation on how to do this and problems people may encounter}. Alternatively call an expert, such as a Plumber who can make the simple fix quickly and cheaply.
  4. At XXXX Plumbing we fix 100’s of leaking taps a year. It is a 15-minute task for us. We will fix the leaking tap for a fixed fee of £40
  5. Call us today and we will have that dripping tap fixed by bedtime.

Potential customers could find the website through searches for “how to fix a leaking tap”, and read through to the simple solution and possibly convert to a paying customer.

Fresh, engaging content should be added to your website on a monthly basis. Converting visitors to customers

Call To Action (CTA) is also a very important aspect we need to consider when building content, as it is the main driver for actual conversion of a visitor into a customer. It is also the most overlooked and most infrequently added portion of content to a website. Only this week, a business who requested we review their website said, when asked why they do  not have a call to action on a page, “people can find our telephone number on our contact us page”. A good CTA is not only easy to find, but is an obvious “next step” when the visitor finishes reading the content.

Something as simple as a link to your website at the end of the article can be classed as a CTA, whereas we would create a much more in-depth CTA, like introducing full contact information giving the visitor multiple avenues they can contact, rather than just a link to a website. Not all CTA’s are used to “sell”, as it all depends on the client’s needs and the whole agenda behind the marketing and optimisation. Another CTA may be a charities website trying to obtain a multitude of things, ranging from more donations, volunteering, job applications or even event sign-ups as these are all tangible items that the charity can use to it’s advantage, all be it not to strictly profit from, just to raise funds for said charity in this particular example.
Another example of a non-sale CTA would be the type to obtain information, as having direct access to someone’s contact information e.g. email address or social media page, gives you the ability to directly advertise to someone through a platform less saturated. This may be less true with contemporary media platforms since the scope for advertisement has been capitalised on. This is another side to CTA, as its still obtaining an asset that is beneficial to the company/organisation, which isn’t a sale. Some assets can only be obtained through CTA, which is why it’s important to have direct and straightforward CTA when integrating it into an article

Google Maps – Changes To The Listings

Being listed in the Google Maps section of search results is highly important. The maps have ‘pride of place’ at the top of local search results and so being listed in the maps means your business is listed at the top of the search results. Google has changed the listings from 7 local businesses to 3. This article explains why we believe Google have made the changes and more importantly how to get yourself included in the new Google map listings.

Google Maps – Old Version

Google maps, until August 2015, had 7 local businesses listed at the top of the search results. In the world of SEO this was commonly called “the 7 pack”. It was a highly prized position as it meant that when potential customers, local to a business, were looking for products or services a company was listed at the top of page 1 of the search results, regardless of the optimisation on their website.

The listing included the companies full address and telephone number and many of our customers found they received telephone enquiries simply by being listed in the 7-pack.

Google Maps – Why Has It Changed?

This is only my opinion (please note the Google Legal team – an opinion), but the obvious reason would be to monetise the Google maps.

As mentioned before, being included in the 7-pack and therefore at the top of the local search results for relevant searches by potential customers, was highly lucrative for local businesses. Placing a listing in the maps is “free”, so it is a very cheap and effective way of gaining customers.

I say “free”, as many businesses employ the services of a Google expert or SEO company to get their business listed, and those services are not free, but still make the map listing a very cost effective place to be listed.

The issue, I believe, is that the listings were too popular with users of the Google search engine. It was easy to find a fairly large choice of potential local suppliers. With the address listed it was easy to ascertain who was local, and easy to choose a business if you wanted to visit a showroom or store. With the telephone number listed it was easy to make contact with a company. All of which was great for the internet user and the listed business, but not making Google any money. In fact it was taking customers away from the paid advertising on the page.

In only showing 3 businesses you have more chance of a Google user using the paid adverts to find a business.


Google Maps – New Version

The “new” version of Google maps has significant changes that will effect local businesses.

Firstly, there are only 3 listings. In the world of SEO and ‘Digital Marketing’ it is being nicknamed the “snack pack”. As there are limited places, being included in the top 3 will likely benefit those business more so than it did before. We are listed in position number 1 for searches related to SEO in Bristol, yet we still were a choice of 7 companies. Now we are listed as the number one choice of a menu of only three businesses.

Secondly, the full address has been removed. Where by it was easy for the visitor to see where a company was based or perhaps get an address to visit the business this is no longer shown in plain site.

Lastly, and the most significant factor, the business telephone number has been removed from the listings.

Google Maps – How To Get Listed

If you have been removed from the Google map listings all is not lost. You can get yourself back in to them. If you are listed in the “snack pack” but concerned that your telephone number is not showing, don’t worry.

Firstly, for those in the new map listings – congratulations you are likely to be getting more website visits and enquiries to your business. You are now 1 of only 3 listings at the top of the search results. Potential customers, especially those used to using the map listings, are much more likely to visit either your website or your Google Plus page to find your contact details. With the information on these pages you have more opportunity to convert the customer, before they even make contact. Also, they have moved away from the search results to a page dedicated to you and your products or services.

If your business is not included in the new Google maps you have a number of options.

Option 1 – Do nothing. If a visitor does not select one of the 3 listed businesses they can select “More Companies” at the bottom of the 3 listings – and the first 12 map listings are shown. You are of course less likely to get enquiries, but this option has no cost attached to it.

Option 2 – Get your business in the 3 listings. You can do this yourself. Firstly, ensure that your Google Plus business page profile is 100% complete. Ensure that the address listed is accurate and (very importantly) how your address is written on the page is IDENTICAL to the way it is listed in other places on the internet i.e. your website, local directories etc. By identical I mean that if your address is in “Baldwin Street Bristol” – ensure that it is written that way everywhere and not “Baldwin Street, Bristol” (note the comma) or “Baldwin St. Bristol” (note the abbreviation). Secondly, be consistent with the classification you use in Google Plus for your business. Whatever you have listed in your Google Plus page as your “category” this must be used consistently throughout your own website and directory listings as well. For example a taxi company will be listed in Google Plus under the category “taxis” (note plural). Your website should consistently use that exact word, not”taxi”, “taxi company” or “minicabs” – even if you are a mini cab or private hire company.

For a better chance of success in being listed you may want to consider hiring an SEO company. Google Analytics Spam Data – How To Remove The Bots

Google analytics is a very powerful tool for understanding who is visiting your website, how they find your website and how they interact with your website. This information can be used to further enhance your website, grow traffic and most importantly increase your conversions and revenues. However, Google analytics has a flaw – it allows access to it’s platform from different routes and these routes are exploited by websites and companies to spam your analytics. This article explains how to filter the ‘spam data’ (often and correctly called ‘referrer spam’) so you only see genuine human (customers and potential customers) interactions.

Why Are My Analytics Being Spammed?

The first thing you must understand is that these companies are not targeting you or your website. It may feel as though you are personally being singled out, but these spam websites are going after EVERY website that utilises the Google analytics tool (which is probably 95% of all websites on the internet).

These websites are not actually ‘visiting’ your website, they are simply using code and crawling servers to make it appear as though they have visited your website.

Why do they do this? For one reason only – so that you see their website address in your analytics and visit their website.

Once there you might buy their services – which are normally a similar service of getting your website address in to other websites analytics.

Lets do some math. According to a report in late in 2014, there were over 1 BILLION domain names registered around the world. It was suggested that only 25% of these were active websites. If 95% of these have Google analytics and are being spammed that is a lot of people tempted to look at the website of the ‘spammers’. If 0.1% of those buy a service, it is a profitable enterprise

  • Registered Domains: 1,000,000,000
  • Active Websites: 250,000,000
  • Google Analytics (circa): 237,500,000
  • Might Visit The Spam Website: 23,750,000
  • If 0.1% bought a service: 23,750 customers

So, in adding their website to analytics and if only 10% of people were interested enough to visit their website that equates to over 23 Million visitors to a website. If only 0.1% of the 10% bought the service that is nearly 24,000 customers…

…and then they do it all again with a new website in your analytics.

Why Doesn’t Google Stop Spam Data In The Analytics?

A few years ago Google opened up the Analytics software to Developers. This was for everyone’s benefit so they can add their stats to reports or other services that utilise the powerful information that a websites analytics holds. This loophole allowed the spam websites a back door to analytics.

Google states that it doesn’t use your websites analytics as a measure of where your webpage or website should rank. They claim to separate  the ‘search’ division of Google, from the ‘anti-spam’ and ‘analytics’ divisions. Therefore, it doesn’t effect any of the ‘divisions’ within Google. If the ‘anti-spam’ team do not use ‘analytics’ by choice or by policy, they cannot stop these spammers.

In my opinion, it is very likely that Google do not use analytics as a ranking factor. This would leave them open to to questions by competitors or other providers of analytics – as a website with analytics from Google would have an unfair advantage in rankings.

Is Referrer Spam Effecting My Website SEO?

So Google state that the referrer spam is not effecting your rankings, but is it effecting your websites search engine optimisation or SEO? The answer is Yes and No:

Does Referrer spam effect SEO – No

As stated before, the referrer spam website is not actually visiting your website, it simply adds data to your analytics. When you get hit by a referrer spam website your ‘visitors’, ‘bounce rate’ and ‘time on site’ will go through the roof which gives the impression that your website is really popular in terms of visitors, but really unpopular in terms of interaction with your website. As these refer websites are not actually visiting your website they are not effecting what Google sees as interaction with your website. Also, once again, Google state they do not use analytics to rank your website.

Does Referrer spam effect SEO – Yes

Google analytics is a very powerful tool for a business owner or an SEO agency, You can track how people find your website (search terms, keywords and queries), how they interact with your website (what pages they first land on, how long they spend on your webpage / website, which page they leave your website from) and how many convert to paying customer or subscribers (goals).

If you know this data you can use it to drive more customers to search terms and pages that work well, and make changes to pages that are not performing as well. Growing your customer numbers, conversions and revenue.

That is why it is important to have clear, clean Google analytics.

How To Filter Referrer Spam From Google Analytics
